A pack of hunting hounds kept by the Watchers upon Oldavor’s border. These unfortunate hounds met a gruesome end in the maw of a rabid shapeshifter. Thus they themselves have become more fuel for its ghastly expansion, threatening to overrun a small border post. Without the cunning hivemind of the Shapeshifters to control them, it seems they are little more than rabid beasts, yet any psionically gifted individual would indeed have the fortitude to enthrall such creatures, enforcing them to hunt with intellect rather than ravenous hunger.

After the death of the Shapeshifter controlling mind four years prior, all the monstrosities under its influence entered a berserk-induced state, ravenous hunger driving them forward as no cold and calculating mind remained to temper it and guide their facsimile hands. Shapeshifters since have thus been beasts who instead barely resemble the original forms from which they took, and are instead grotesque monstrosities propelled by a ceaseless appetite for flesh and bone. The job of the Watchers and its Rangers has thus grown easier for it, never needing to second guess someone’s true nature, with the threat staring right in front of them instead.

Yet complacency begets peril, and in the years since the Shapeshifters forsook their subtle nature, the Watchers have ceased continuing their old rigorous checks and safety measures against Shapeshifters. It was such complacency that saw an entire pack of hunting and tracking dogs lost in a blizzard, yet unquestioned and untested when they returned to the border post that housed them. The post was hence overrun as the creatures revealed their true nature, hinting at something more sinister stirring beneath the scenes, another intelligence controlling this group, guiding them with stealth and cunning as it did before.

Now with the Watchers spread thin, and their own patrols not returning, they seek outside help from the WEHL to re-establish contact with the border post after its silence, and clear out any enemies that might be present. The thought that it might have been overrun by Shapeshifters has only been giving a fleeting consideration, with more thought placed that they were the subjects of an Oldavori raid.
