A bloodmage who was recruited by the Baroness shortly after her return to Castle Beaufax. Renard is responsible for much of the charm and illusory magic that conceals the true identities and nature of Beaufax’s residents, and is able to alter or wipe the memories of guests who were spared the evening’s frightful end, so that they go home to tell their friends and family of the delightful time they had there. Renard himself is also a powerful mage, though rarely has had to use his powers to their full extent, as his pull over the mind can often bring him the result he desires regardless.
Renard has spent two-hundred years cursed with vampirism, a curse he freely sought to take on himself from those who would be willing to share it. Renard in his life, was a powerful mage, one whose dark arts had seen him exiled from many of Tharador’s magical institutions, breaching the sanctities of the Breath and nature itself for his maleficent conjurations. Age and mortality became the final obstacles he was forced to overcome, and while the path to lichdom was long, arduous and risky, attracting attention of any who might clue into his plans, an easier solution sat before him to immortality: vampirism.
While it held its own host of downsides, it would ultimately provide his goal for a fraction of the time, and perhaps a lower price to pay. Thus, Renard struck a bargain with a powerful merchant he had suspected of being a vampire for some time, taking on the dark gift of vampirism in exchange for his services for a century. The merchant and Renard both held up their ends of the bargain, and at the end of his tenure, the two parted ways, with Renard learning much of his dark gift in that time, and ways it could in fact alter and enhance his own spellcasting abilities.
Thus he discovered a new form of sorcery: haemomancy. Whilst his discovery was not completely new to the arcanology of Tharador, blood magic was a powerful and forbidden magic, one equally as despised as necromancy, yet rarer and more difficult to wield, owing to its finite resources. Over the years, Renard honed his craft in a way that it could often negate many of the negative effects of vampirism: changing the weather to shelter them from the sun or creating a subtle barrier over their skin to shield them from direct sunlight instead. Similarly, his illusory magic was able to completely alter the viewed appearance of his kin, so much so that their vampiric nature was completely hidden, no matter how starved they might be. Hearing of these tales, Noctra de Blanc sought out Renard when she reclaimed her home in Greypeak, and invited him to her court in return for a home and a mountain of gold to fund whatever research and tasks he pursued. Now he is an esteemed guest at many of her masquerades, his illusions and conjurations masking the eyes of the mortal guests, and wiping the minds of those who left and were spared from becoming meals themselves.
