Many have tried to escape the embrace of the end. Caerian himself was one of them, centuries ago in a different life, with a different name. Yet when he met his end, he found not a cold and careless Oblivion, but instead a warmth shared by all who came before. Now, as a Selvaneri of Namneri, he brings this warmth to those who once walked a path like him, reminding all that death is but another phase of one’s existence, not its end.
Caerian is one of the few Selvaneri to find his place among them long after his death. In life, Caerian was a warrior of Draksborne, one who saw its days of glory in its golden age. Yet after his own close brush with death, Caerian traded his sword for scholarly pursuits, in particular the school of alchemy. Many before him had treaded a similar path, hoping to find the alchemical formula for eternal life, every waking moment haunted by the reminder that he one day shall die. His obsession consumed him, and whilst he achieved many great things for the Empire in his time as a Grand Alchemist, the formula for eternal life eluded him, until he was embraced by Namneri’s Chalice.
Yet, death was not his end. In the halls of Syelden, Caerian found himself united with those whom he had left behind, long ago. His mother and father, sister, comrades. All were present to greet him as awoke in its halls. In a rare occurrence, Namneri himself appeared to Caerian, telling him that this paradise was that which he sought so desperately to stave off. Caerian fell to his knees and wept, for his life’s work had been in vain, and in mockery of the graceful divine. Namneri thus offered to Caerian as place in service, to redeem himself, and ensure none others may fall to the same sickness of the mind as him. The alchemist gladly accepted, and thus begun his devotion to the Divine of Death.
In those aeons, Caerian ascended to be among Namneri’s Selvaneri, having proved himself through divine interventions with mortals, and stamping out evils of undeath festering at the hands of Myrothlir. Now he is the Angel of Death, that who brings those so desperate to deny the end, into Namneri’s embrace. With the assault on Syelden, he is called to defend the home of his patron, and the realms of his ancestors.
