It was not until the invasion of Velandria a year ago that he awoke to his divine heritage though, something stirring within him as he was faced with death. A soul beyond his own took hold, and he relentlessly beat back the foes who would have claimed his life. Within him this soul still stirs, speaking to him, aiding him and guiding his actions.

Born beyond the Reveries of Nosmarka’s Nocturnal Abyss, Istar was raised by a Nosmeni couple in the city of Velandria, in Belfrie. Though Belfrie had usually been known for its tolerance and acceptance of inhuman races, Nosmeni were still looked at with some form of fear and disdain, a hellish people whose appearance startled many who had not seen them before. Though these encounters were rare, it shaped Istar’s childhood as a secluded man, one who instead tried to lose himself in his work as a cobbler, rather than try to follow in his father’s footsteps as an orator or his mother’s footsteps as a professor at the University of Ardris. For though his mother was exceptionally gifted in evocation magics owing to her infernal heritage, it seemed that Istar was inert, unable to cast even the most basic hellish spells that were privy to all Nosmeni.

Though his siblings seemed to follow mostly in his mother’s footsteps, becoming students at the University, Istar accepted his fate and instead focused his mind into a craft which seemed to make ample coin in the gilded city. Though as fate would have it, not even this would be granted to him. The people of Velandria were growing ill-content with the Nosmeni populace after a Nosmeni performer beheaded his troubadour onstage, yelling infernal curses at his audience in his dying breaths after he was put down by crossbow fire. Several other incidents sparked up after, as Nosmeni began feeling the ire of the fear and paranoia that was now rife amongst Velandria’s populace towards the infernal beings. Istar experienced this himself: his job being vandalised and his goods pilfered as tensions deepened. It all culminated with an invasion from Nosmarka’s Abyss, portals opening and devils and demons flooding through. It was in this time that Istar was faced with peril, a sure death coming to him, though something within awoke at this moment..

A voice whispering in his mind, latent, primal, desperate, drove him forward. Despite his mind’s own protest, it was as though his body left the shelter of his shop against his will, dragging him into the streets where a slew of devils reigned death upon those trying to flee in the streets. One launched itself at him, and his heart grew still for a moment. Then, light. Blinding rays of white and gold erupted from him, cutting through the devil like a ballistae through a man. It was utterly destroyed, and Istar was left panting, feeling a sudden change within him. A voice now lurked in his mind, introducing itself as Solas. It was the source of Istar’s new power, a divine soul that had lurked within him from birth, now making itself known at the time it was needed. He played a large role in thereafter purging many of Nosmarka’s devils from the streets, alongside the contingent of divine that arrived to aid.

It was hereafter that he came face to face with Tharavës, a Selvaneri of Tharanais. He bestowed onto Istar the knowledge that his soul was one split in two: imbued with the being called Solas, a fragment of one of Istar’s past lives who was an unyielding servant to Tharanais. Yet when Solas died, his soul did not enter Namneri’s chalice, much to their confusion. Solas and Istar are one and the same, yet now their minds are constantly at war with another, between the wish to return to a life of simplicity, and the duty to the aid the Selvaneri, now culminating in him aiding in the reconstruction of Namneri’s Chalice.
