Big Iron was once one of those, though now in exile, lives a life as a mercenary with no meaning. He collects heads for gold, simply awaiting the day his kin might forget or forgive his transgressions, or someone collects his head first. Since his arrival on Tharador’s shores, Big Iron has deserted the ranks of his Koldeni employers, seeing their invasion as a suicide mission. He has thus taken on contract work within the World Explorer’s & Hunter’s League, where his talents elevate him far above the rank and file members of the league.

Across the golden sands of the Soulforged land of Automatia many Edradorian merchants make frequent travels. Though these lands are hostile, devoid of life save for the Soulforged and whatever hostile creatures lurk beneath their feet. Yet its passage is nearly essential for any merchants who wish to cross the great expanse of desert to do trade with the rest of the continent, and from this need an order of rangers arose among the Soulforged: those who had mastered the ways of the desert. They called themselves the Rangers of Ishtar, harbingers of life and war. Rangers like these knew how to cross the desert without disturbing its violent fauna, and needing no sustenance themselves, were able to easily and safely escort their clients for a handsome fee, and in time this began to include Soulforged merchants as well, seeking to trade with the outside world.

Ferrum was one of these rangers, and over the centuries he was able to bring thousands of merchants safely across the ruined wasteland of the Anshani Empire. Though like all Soulforged, he was weighed with the burden of immortality, yet a limited memory, for all memories older than a century would dwindle like the mind of a senile man, though their new memories were sharp. It was such an occasion as Ferrum was escorting a caravan of Sun Elves bound for Myitelnari, a route he had not travelled in many decades. His memory began to fail, and the caravan became lost in the desert, with many of its members beginning to fall victim to the harsh landscape. Ferrum panicked when they began throwing their fists at one another, and in a moment of haste, drove his blade through one of the dissenting caravan master who proposed a mutiny.

The shock of the act had them immediately halt their squabble, and watch in horror as their guide simply walked away, leaving them to the elements of the waste. When Ferrum returned to the capital of Deryngate, a week early, he was questioned. Stewing and resenting the situation for a week, he simply admitted to his crimes. As the Soulforged did not believe in executing one another, for their numbers were thinning without a means to replicate themselves, Ferrum was cast out of Automatia, under penalty of torture if he did return.

Thus Ferrum wandered the rim of kingdoms scattered around Automatia, providing mercenary work with his unique skillset, earning him the moniker “Big Iron” both in reference to his stature and the masterwork and immaculate Anshani weapon he carried on his hip. Men had seen the Soulforged turn his foes into naught but paste and blood with it, and his reputation as a fierce killer earned him a handsome pay from the Council of Abunen Kolden, who sent him along with other contingents of mercenaries to act as a strike force in their invaders homeland upon Tharador.

That was a year ago, and shortly after arriving on Tharador’s shore, Big Iron could see the invasion into this land was doomed. After defeat and near-death at the hands of the defenders, Big Iron was able to desert, fleeing southwards until he came to the townships of the foes whom his employers waged war with. Though they knew nothing of Ferrum’s mission and place among their enemies, and thus took him in, offered him aid and told him the stories of their people, and their struggle against the Koldeni menace. Though it did not kindle any inspiration within the Soulforged’s stony heart, it did give him the perspective that Tharador was a land of greater opportunity than Edrador, if a wretched lot like the Elemi could carve a nation for themselves here from the blood of their enemies. Thus, he found himself in the employe of the World Explorer’s & Hunter’s League, quickly climbing its ranks as a proficient hunter and tomb of knowledge of Edradori and particularly Automatian culture. Yet in turn, he wishes to gain his own understanding of Tharador, and perhaps reverse the memories he has long since lost.
